When most people think of Indonesia, they probably imagine a lush, tropical paradise with white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. And while it certainly does have all that to offer, Indonesia is also home to some jaw-droppingly beautiful travel destinations that are well worth a visit. From the misty mountains of Sumatra to the idyllic islands of Bali and Lombok, here are places in Indonesia that will take your breath away!

Raja Ampat Islands

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, the Raja Ampat Islands are located off the west coast of Papua. The islands are home to some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world and offer visitors a chance to see an incredible array of marine life. Snorkelling and diving are both popular activities here, and there are plenty of tour operators that can take you out to explore the reef.

Bunaken National Marine Park

Another great spot for snorkelling and diving is Bunaken National Marine Park, located off the coast of North Sulawesi. The park covers an area of over 80 square kilometres and is home to an incredible variety of corals and fish. Visitors can also explore mangrove forests, seagrass beds and sandy beaches.

Tangkoko National Park

Located on the island of Sulawesi, Tangkoko National Park is one of the best places in Indonesia to see wildlife. The park is home to an incredible variety of animals, including tarsiers (tiny primates that are endemic to the island), macaques, Sulawesi black apes and a variety of bird species. Visitors can also take a dip in one of the park’s many hot springs.

Mount Bromo

One of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations, Mount Bromo is an active volcano that last erupted in 2016. The mountain is located in East Java and is part of the Tengger Caldera, a massive volcanic crater that is home to several other mountains. Visitors can hike to the top of Mount Bromo for an incredible view of the surrounding area.

Prambanan Temple

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Prambanan Temple is one of the largest Hindu temples in Southeast Asia. The temple was built in the ninth century and is dedicated to the three main Hindu deities: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The temple complex covers an area of over 150 acres and includes hundreds of smaller temples. Visitors can explore the complex and learn about the history of this amazing site.

Baliem Valley

The Baliem Valley is located in Papua Province and is home to some of Indonesia’s most remote tribes. The valley is incredibly beautiful, with lush green mountains and pristine rivers. Visitors can trek through the valley and visit villages to learn about the traditional way of life.

Nusa Penida Island

Nusa Penida is an island located just off the southeast coast of Bali. The island is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia, as well as a variety of restaurants and cafes. Visitors can explore the island by foot, or take a boat tour to see some of the area’s best sights.
